PURPOSE OF THE COURSE

The primary goal of the Ottoman Turkish course is to shed light on history by reading ancient texts written in this language. Thousands of works, articles, poems, and letters written in Ottoman Turkish, the written language we have used for centuries, are waiting to be translated and brought to light.

Who is the Ottoman Turkish Course for?

The Ottoman Turkish course is suitable for anyone who wants to learn this script, regardless of age. It is particularly useful for researching subjects such as History, Turkish Language and Literature, Librarianship, and Information and Document Management.

OTTOMAN TURKISH COURSE OUTCOMES:

Those taking Ottoman Turkish courses learn various Ottoman Turkish scripts, such as matbu, rika, divani, talik, etc., depending on their level of proficiency, and thus become capable of reading these texts, which have been used for centuries. They can also learn and distinguish words and phrases that have come into our language from Arabic and Persian. Even if they don't know the meaning of words, they can decipher their meanings based on their roots.

Week 16: Continuation of Arabic meters, learning Arabic numbers and months.

Week 17 Learning the Arabic Rica alphabet and the differences between printed letters.

Week 18: Learning how to write Rika letters at the beginning, middle and end with examples.

Week 19: Beginning to read simple rika texts.

Week 20: Reading simple rika texts.

Week 21 Understanding the content of the text by reading simple rika texts.

Week 22: Exercises on recognizing and reading different Ottoman Turkish writing styles.

Week 23: Reading simple sentences in different writing styles such as Rika, Divani, Talik, Thuluth.

Week 24: Reading simple archive texts and understanding their topics.

Cengiz Sahinalp

Born in 1998 in Bahçelievler, Istanbul, Cengiz Şahinalp graduated from the History Department of Marmara University in 2020. He is registered as a Notary-Sworn Translator of Ottoman Turkish and has made various translations in this field. Between February 2023 and October 2023, he worked as an Ottoman translator for the TÜBİTAK project "A Cliometric Analysis of the 1874 Istanbul Real Estate Survey." He is currently pursuing his master's degree in Contemporary History at Marmara University. His thesis is titled "The Life and Administrative Career of Muhsinzade Abdullah Pasha."

1. Participants who meet the attendance requirements will be eligible to receive a certificate. At the end of the training, participants will receive a training certificate approved by the Rectorate, prepared in collaboration with the relevant universities, and visible on the e-Government website.
2-At the end of the training, participants are eligible to receive an internationally valid English language training certificate, which can be searched through e-Government and the relevant university's QR code. 100% attendance is required for certification programs. Certificates are issued digitally with a traceable and searchable QR code. We do not issue printed certificates with wet signatures; please do not request them.
